Is AI Quietly Killing Your Self-Belief?

We live in a world where asking AI for help has become second nature.

As a mindset mentor, I spend a lot of time, thinking. AI is getting a little bit of a bashing on LinkedIn and I get it. We live in a world where truth and transparency are the order of the day. I myself, really like it. It's a great tool. What I have seen though is where AI has went beyond a tool and now is replacing one of our higher mental faculties, our imagination.

AI for help has become second nature.

Need to name a product? Ask AI.

Need content ideas? Ask AI.

Want feedback on your idea? Why not run it through ChatGPT?

It feels smart.

Efficient.

and it's FREE!

So it got me thinking...

But what if all this convenience is quietly eroding your confidence?

What if the more you turn to AI, the less you turn to yourself?

You’re Outsourcing the One Thing That Makes You Brilliant!!

There’s a subtle, quiet shift that happens when you get into the habit of using AI to generate ideas, make decisions, or even just validate your thinking. I know as I myself have felt it. It's easy to down play it when you have a large to-do list.

At first, it’s a tool. A shortcut.

But over time, it becomes a something we lean on more and more.

You start to question your own instincts. You doubt your creative thinking. You'r default is to “Let me just check what Chat BGT says” instead of trusting your own brain.

And here’s the real cost:

You weaken your imagination. You dull your creative edge. And you build a habit of second-guessing, which trains your mind to seek validation and reassurance outside of yourself.

For coaches, founders, creatives, leaders and thinkers, in my personal opinion this is dangerous territory.

Your Imagination Is a Mental Muscle - Use It or Lose It!

We’ve been gifted with six incredible higher mental faculties. One of them is imagination.

And like any muscle, it gets stronger the more you use it. The more you create before you consult. The more you think through a challenge before you type it in.

But here’s the problem:

When you try to access your imagination after weeks (or months) of outsourcing it, it might feel rusty. You will get a bad idea. Or no idea. You might start thinking, ' I’m not good at this. Better to ask AI.'

But that’s not true. It’s just like learning to ride a bike.

You wobble at the start. You can’t go in a straight line. You need a little support, a little balance. But the more you practice, the steadier you become.

Eventually, you’re not just riding - you’re flying.

And if you're anything like me at age 11, you might even find yourself coasting downhill, hands in the air, doing the Macarena on your childhood bike.

(Yes, I really did that and also giving my age away too! 😂)

AI Isn’t the Enemy. Over dependence Is.

To be clear, I’m not anti-AI.

I use it. I appreciate it. You’re literally reading a post I drafted with help from it.

But I’m fiercely protective of the order in which it gets used.

Start with you.

Start with your brain.

Start with your idea.

(My thought that AI can affect your self- belief was mine, not AI's)

Then, if you want to finesse or sharpen or edit, it can really help you.

But don’t skip the part where you think for yourself.

Because that’s the part that grows your confidence. That strengthens your belief. That sharpens your original voice.

And here’s the truth no machine can replicate:

'AI will only ever reflect what already exists. You have the power to create what’s never existed before. - Linda Carmichael'

So Here’s My Challenge to You:

Next time you're tempted to 'just ask ChatGPT', pause.

Ask yourself first.

What do you think? What would you say? What’s the first idea that comes up?

It might not be perfect. It might be a bit wobbly. But that’s how self-belief is built.

One pedal stroke at a time.
