The Hidden Cost of “Not Yet”

The Hidden Cost of “Not Yet”

Reading Time 📖 : 3–4 minutes
We all have decisions we put off.

Big ones.

Small ones.

Decisions we know that, if acted on, could shift the direction of our life or business.

And most of the time, we tell ourselves we’re waiting for:

  • The “perfect” timing

  • More certainty

  • More money, resources, or support

We call it “not yet.”

But here’s the truth, “not yet” has a cost.

Every day you delay a decision, life moves forward without you. Opportunities pass.

Momentum stalls.

Patterns stay the same.

You’re not just pausing... you’re quietly building the habit of hesitation.

And here’s a bitter pill: not making a decision is still a decision.

Choosing to wait, to procrastinate, or to do nothing isn’t neutral.

It’s a mental move that keeps you exactly where you are, or worse, slowly drifting away from the life you want.

Every “not yet” compounds into lost potential, unfulfilled possibilities, and regret.

It's easy to fall into this trap. So many of us are busy, competent and capable, yet waiting for the right conditions that may never arrive.

And the longer the wait, the more the “one day” list grows, quietly limiting the life you could be living.

Why we avoid decisions

  • Fear of making the wrong choice

  • Fear of failure or looking foolish

  • Fear of loss. Money, status, or comfort.

These are paradigms. Deeply held beliefs that guide your choices unconsciously. They don’t disappear by wishing them away. They shift when you act differently, starting with awareness and choice.

Decision: The Single Mental Move That Can Flip Your Life

Decision is the most powerful mental move you can make.

It’s one move, yet it changes everything.

It cuts through fear, hesitation, and uncertainty.

It transforms the “what ifs” into a plan of action.

Even small decisions have compounding effects. Decide to pick up the phone. Decide to take a different route. Decide to speak up. Decide to invest in yourself.

Each one builds confidence, momentum, and clarity.

Every meaningful life change begins with a single decision, a commitment to move from indecision into action 🔥

How to make better decisions today.

  1. Recognise the hesitation – Name what you’ve been putting off.

  2. Get clear on the cost of inaction – What happens if you stay in “not yet”?

  3. Decide and commit – Even imperfect action is better than perfect inaction. (Read that again!)

  4. Act consistently – Repetition changes patterns, not planning alone.

Reflect and adjust – Each decision teaches you more about yourself and your next step.

Reflection prompts:

  • What decision have I been avoiding lately?

  • What would happen if I acted on it today?

  • How would my life change if I consistently made the decisions I know I need to make? (really think about this one and maybe make sure you are sitting down!)

  • If I don’t decide, what story am I telling myself about my life?

Final Thoughts:

Making decisions can feel hard. And that’s completely normal.

Most of us weren’t programmed to make swift, bold decisions. Very quickly we develope the fear of getting it wrong. I know I had what felt like 'public humiliations' at schools for not knowing the correct word or number at a young age.

Our paradigms, habits, and early experiences often keep us cautious, second-guessing, and stuck in “not yet.” Changing that isn’t about forcing yourself to act overnight; it’s about understanding the patterns that are holding you back and building a process that helps you step forward with confidence.

If you want support turning awareness into consistent action, I work with people inside Thinking Into Results to do exactly that. Identify the hidden rules guiding their decisions, shift the mindset, and step into action with clarity and momentum.
